The Position
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. The University of Nevada Las Vegas Department of Facilities is seeking a Heat Plant Specialist 2. This position will adjust, monitor, maintain, clean and repair high and/or low pressure boilers and hot water heat generating equipment, auxiliary equipment such as fuel and combustion systems, compressors, pumps, steam lines, steam traps, heat exchangers, water lines, controls and gauges; install, retrofit and fabricate new equipment and components utilizing electrical, welding and plumbing skills in order to update the system or replace worn parts; check system functions by monitoring and/or adjusting a computerized energy management system, combustion and safety controls, and pressure and temperature gauges to ensure safe and efficient operation of heat plant equipment; take water samples; analyze chemical properties of feed water; add chemicals and blow down water level controls as needed to prevent deposit and sludge buildup; perform seasonal overhauls and inspection preparation of heat plant and heat distribution systems by dismantling and cleaning boilers, repairing or replacing refractories, repacking valves, repairing pumps and seals, and checking and calibrating controls according to agency policies and regulatory requirements; responsible to maintain current records and logs on required equipment to include proper Department of Air Quality Environmental Management (DAQEM) documentation; prepare budget requests for maintenance and equipment replacement. Additionally, this position will maintain, repair, install, and operate heating equipment. The position will also be responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment rated up to 480 volt, 3 phase.
The work schedule is M-F, 7:30am-4:00pm. Per the Nevada State Legislature, classified employees are subject to six mandatory unpaid furlough days through June 30, 2014. **UNLV is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity educator and employer committed to excellence through diversity.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Completion of a recognized heat plant apprenticeship program; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
Skills Required
    A valid Nevada Class C driver's license is required for this position at the time of appointment.
